Membership of the Order
Membership of the International Knightly Order of St George is offered to ladies and gentlemen of sound mind who are practising Christians over the age of 21, of exemplary social and moral reputation and living honourably. The Grand Master extends to suitable individuals a personal invitation to join the Order normally following nomination by two serving members.
All members irrespective of race, gender or ability share the equality of the sons and daughters of God by virtue of their common baptism. They are appointed as Knights and Dames and invested with the insignia and mantle indicating their state by the Grand Master or his delegate in a ceremony held in a consecrated place. The neck decoration is a cross flory bearing an oval panel depicting the mounted figure of St George slaying the dragon, which is suspended from the Holy Crown of St Stephen of Hungary (distinguished by its shape and the tilted cross which surmounts it). At investitures the traditional habit is worn, a hooded, long-sleeved black robe, which bears on the left breast a red shield emblazoned with a silver double-barred cross and the letters IVISHFS (In Veritate Iustus Sum Huic Fraternali Societati - In truth, I am faithful to this brotherly society). Within the Order, the title Chevalier or Dame and the postnominals KStG or DStG are adopted upon investiture.
For distinguished service, the Grand Master may promote individuals to the rank of Knight Commander (KCStG) or Dame Commander (DCStG). The supreme honour of the Order is the Grand Cross (GCStG), which is awarded to show esteem for high dignitaries and for exceptional service to the Order.
The head of the Order is the Grand Master. He appoints officers at his discretion and for the duration of his pleasure, including the Deputy Grand Masters, Grand Chancellor, Secretary-General, Receiver-General, Chaplain-General, and such other officers as may be deemed necessary. The Grand Magistry comprises the Grand Master and his Deputies, the Chaplain-General and the Receiver-General. National jurisdictions of the Order may be established under the leadership of a Prior nominated by the Grand Master; Our Dutch site, which is in English has further information. The International Knightly Order of St George is under the spiritual protection of the Rt Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali GCStG, Lord Bishop of Rochester.
