PWRR Evening at Dover Castle

PWRR Evening at Dover Castle

Dated: 20/07/2009 Grand Prior with 3rd Batt PWRR

The Grand Prior, Chev Simon McIlwaine, and UK Grand Priory Liaison officer to Kent Army Benevolent Fund, Chev Ron Hughes,(ex RCT) were honoured to be invited by our affiliated TA Regiment, 3rd Bn of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment to join them and 1PWRR at a most enjoyable reception at Dover Castle on Friday evening 18th July.

The PWRR are the "county" regiment of Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and Middx and are the successors to illustrious regiments such as the Buffs, the Queen's Regiment and the Hampshires.

The CO of 1PWRR, Lt. Col Charlie Sykes, gave a fascinating presentation and slide show of their tours of duty in Basra and Afghanistan.

In addition to eliminating the Taliban from their TAORs, the "Tigers" are working hard to build schools, hospitals and infrastructure in areas under threat, and support for democratic institutions and friendly relationships with village elders and the law-abiding population are at the core of the British Army's strategic mission. The battle against the Taliban has to be won. Failure is not an option, and the soldiers on the ground would perceive that as a betrayal of their brothers who have made the supreme sacrifice.

We were served a delicious curry buffet by our Army hosts and, although a downpour resulted in
a slight change in the arrangements, we were treated to "beating the retreat" by the Corps of Drums of the PWRR.

The Tigers are a great bunch, and we proud to be associated with them.

We urge all our Chevaliers and Dames to join with us in supporting them and their Regimental
Welfare Fund. Please send a cheque for whatever you can afford, payable to "Central Bank 3 PWRR"
